"I feel American. I think American. I talk American. My only connection with Japan is that I look Japanese." (Harry Y. Kita)
The forced removal of all people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast of the United States during WWII caused deep confusion and hardship for Japanese American citizens like farmer Takeo Yuki and Dr. Harry Kita who were interviewed by Frank Taylor for this story in the May 9, 1942 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. Taylor describes the impact on the Japanese community and exposes the opportunism that motivated members of the agricultural industry such as the Salinas Vegetable Grower-Shipper Association behind their support for the removal of the Japanese from the Salinas Valley.
